Things I love about Njinikom…
-How much more of an appreciation it has given me for simple things, like a hot shower…
-It is absolutely beautiful
-The people here are ridiculously nice and it has been so easy to make friends
-Getting “dashed” things (a dash is a gift). Kom people are extremely generous, which has resulted in me gaining some pretty fantastic goodies for no reason whatsoever
-Men hold hands. It’s adorable.
-Moto rides. Although they are sometimes mildly terrifying, getting driven to work on a motorcycle is pretty damn fun.
-Eating fufu njama njama with my hands.
-The local dialect, Kom. Everyone here is so patient helping me learn the language and so genuinely happy when they hear me speak it
-There are goats everywhere! The baby goats and pregnant ones are my favorites.
-Once a week I get to help with a baby vaccination clinic, which is extremely fun since all of the babies are adorable.
-Country Sundays. Every 4 days is a “country Sunday” here. This means that no one is allowed to go work on their farms that day to give everyone a break. Great idea.
-I can get 3 avocados ( or as they call them, pears ) for 100cfa, which is basically twenty cents
-The random francophone people that I get to practice my french with
-The fact that you don’t have to call someone before you go to their house. You just show up.
-Crydies. Instead of having a funeral when someone passes, they have a huge party, “cry die” to celebrate that person’s life.
-Jujus. who are secret society(ish) traditional dancers who perform at crydies
-Being forced to learn how to bake/cook things that I have always taken for granted, such as bread
-Njamma, the village dog
-Knowing that I could spend an entire day just walking around town talking with people.
